Writer

My professional writing experience is divided between assignments for the popular press, scholarly articles for academic audiences, and copywriting for sundry informational, promotional, educational, etc., purposes.

Popular Press

In almost 20 years of writing I’ve traveled around the country and around the world to cover stories across a range of topics: including arts, culture, politics, sports, and labor.

My specialty is music journalism and music criticism.

I’ve contributed work to the following outlets: Cambridge Day, Hump Day News, QRO Magazine, Working Mass, Drowned In Sound, Ampeater Review, and more.

Scholarly Writing

While a graduate student in philosophy and an adjunct faculty member at schools in and around Chicago (Loyola University Chicago, DePaul University, Dominican University), I produced voluminous quantities of scholarly writing for various purposes: for lectures, for study aids, for presentations at academic conferences, and for publication in scholarly journals. My academic writing focused on my areas of focus within philosophy: ethics, phenomenology, aesthetics, and the philosophy of war.

Copywriting

I’ve developed and deployed the skill of writing concise and persuasive copy at various points along my professional journey. Copy to solicit writing submissions at ASAGE (American Society for Aesthetics Graduate E-Journal); to publicize events for the Phenomenology Research Group’s speaker series; to describe the content, agenda, and workload of a class to prospective university students; to recruit photographers, writers, and podders at Hump Day News; to organize community functions on behalf of Cambridge Day; to build brand recognition and promote a calendar of events at Regent Theatre.

My copywriting skills have evolved alongside the emerging role of social media platforms in communication. As the social media manager at Regent Theatre, I’ve been in charge of engineering multi-phase, multi-network marketing campaigns, building the visual assets for online and physical spots, and writing the appropriate copy to fit the platform.

Whether you’re producing a flyer, an event page on a venue website, a tweet, a Facebook or Instagram post (or reel, or story!), Youtube, etc., being able to navigate a multi-modal communication environment is essential in order to tailor the copy to the output platform.
